The Palio: Pre-race Pageantry


Prior to the Palio, each contrada displayed its costumes, colours and pageantry for the spectators and dignitaries.

There were different medieval figures involved, everyone from children to pages who performed with the flags to knights. No detail was spared in recreating a vivid scene from the 1400’s.

Lupa (She-Wolf)

Pantera (the Panther)

Chiocciola (the Snail)

Nicchio (the Shell)

Brucco (the Caterpillar)
