The Goodwood Revival - The Battle of Britain!

Another celebration happening on the Goodwood Revival weekend was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britian was fought in the summer and fall of 1940. Over 110,000 young men and boys flew from airfields such as this with over 55,573 of them never to see British soil again. Some 16,000 became prisoners of war.

American P-51 Mustangs, Hawker Hurricanes and AVRO Lancasters joined the famous Supermarine Spitfires against the mighty Luftwaffe which were sent wave after wave against the tiny island nation.

Walking onto the airfield at West Hampnett, now known as Goodwood, was like walking into the 1940’s. The Goodwood circuit hosted the collection of beautifully restored aircraft that flew to commemorate this terrible era of war.
